Fire Extinguisher's are not all the same. There are different types of fire, therefore there are different types of fire extinguisher. Having the right Fire Extinguisher(s) in your home can save lives and property. All fire extinguishers are labeled with standard symbols, letters, or both for the types (class) of fire they can extinguish. Below is a chart showing and describing the classes.

* Not all Class D fires use the same Class D Extinguishing Material. Class D Fire Extinguishers designate what Combustible Metal its contents are specifically designed for extinguishing. A slash through a symbol indicates the extinguisher can not be used on that class of fire. Class A (only) extinguishers are not suitable for Class B or Class C fires and vice-versus. Using the incorrect type of fire extinguisher can increase the danger posed. Multipurpose fire extinguishers, labeled ABC, may be used on Class A, B, or Class C fires. These extinguishers cannot be used on Class D fires. |

To operate a Fire Extinguisher follow the P-A-S-S method (Shown below)
Do not get too close to the fire and have someone call the fire department.

| S queeze the lever | Discharge the extinguishing agent by squeezing the lever. |
| S weep from side to side | Sweep the extinguisher from side to side at the base of the fire. |
Watch the extinguished fire area. Should the fire rekindle, repeat this process.
After use, replace or recharge your fire extinguisher.
If the fire continues to grow, despite your efforts - GET OUT!

Some fire extinguishers operation instructions vary, please check the manufacturers directions. It is recommended to understand the proper operation of your extinguisher before an emergency.
Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors are your front-line defense in protecting you and your family from being injured in a fire.
• Replace your batteries twice a year. It may help to replace your batteries when you change your clocks in Spring and Fall.
• Replace smoke detectors that are more than 10 years old. Smoke detectors lose their effectiveness overtime or may fail with age.
• Frequently test your smoke detectors. Artificial Smoke is available from some hardware and security stores.
• Install a smoke detector on every floor of your home, including basement and attic. It is recommended to also put smoke detectors in each bedroom and your utility room as well.

Plan to escape
In the event of fire, you will want to be prepared to get out of your home in the safest, quickest manor.
• Make a floor plan of your home, marking two paths of escape for each room and arrange a meeting place
• Practice your escape routes at least once a year.
• Smoke and heat rise, so you want to crawl on the floor during your escape. Practice crawling while practicing your escape route.
Fire Extinguishers
Having Fire Extinguishers available and knowing how to use them can save lives and property..
• Keep your fire extinguisher in an accessible location away from potential risk areas. A stove is an example of a risk area, so keep your fire extinguisher at the other end of your kitchen for example.
• Keep Fire Extinguishers away from children. Only able adults should operate a fire extinguisher.
• Use the correct type of fire extinguisher.
• Have an extinguisher that is big enough to be effective, but make sure it is not too big to handle.
• Inspect and maintain your extinguishers every year, following the manufacturer's instructions.
• Recharge or replace fire extinguishers after use, regardless of the amount used. (Service companies can be found in the Yellow Pages)
• Contact the Fire Department to inspect your incident, even if you've extinguished the fire!
Other Prevention and Safety Tips
• Keep Matches and Lighters out of reach of Children. Teach your children to tell you or another adult if they find matches or lighters.
• Don't run extension cords across doorways or walkways.
• Do not smoke in bed or if you are drowsy. Use large, difficult to tip ashtrays in the smoking areas of your home.
• In a smoke filled room, crawl on the floor where the air is cleaner and cooler.
• If you or your clothes catch on fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL to smother the fire.
